Reporting to an experienced CTO, the Lead Engineer will be the first U.S. engineering hire, playing a pivotal role in bridging business strategy and execution. This hands-on role involves coding, managing an offshore engineering team, driving major product releases, and making key technical decisions. With strong potential for growth into a Head of Engineering role, this is a rare opportunity to shape the future of a high-growth startup. Compensation ranges from $220K-$310K per year plus equity, with remote work and frequent travel for leadership meetings.

 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Engineering Execution: Define and enforce sprint cycles, manage development timelines, and hold the offshore team accountable.
  2. Code Contribution: Actively write and review code, improve architecture, and maintain high-quality standards.
  3. Scalable Solutions: Architect scalable solutions to optimize the tech platform for fast-growing ecommerce businesses.
  4. Site Reliability: Manage site reliability efforts during US business hours, ensuring optimal system performance.
  5. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with the COO/CTO, Chief Product Officer, and President to align engineering with business goals.
  6. Offshore Team Management: Mentor and manage India-based engineers, ensuring efficient communication and execution.
  7. Technical Direction: Guide infrastructure choices, performance optimizations, and security best practices.

Screening Requirements

  1. Experience: 8+ years in software engineering, preferably in a high-growth SaaS or ecommerce startup. Strong full-stack experience with Node.js for backend and React for frontend.
  2. Technical Skills: Proficiency in RDBMS like MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and experience with database schema design, SQL querying, and data manipulation. Previous experience in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE).
  3. Leadership & Mindset: Hands-on leader willing to code daily while mentoring engineers. Experience working with offshore teams and enforcing deadlines effectively. Startup mindset: scrappy, entrepreneurial, and thrives in a fast-paced, execution-driven environment.
